Here's why it failed: Oftentimes, there were moments where no one watching would hear a word going on. The comedians all had a spur of the moment insular style like they were all sitting in a room and shooting the shit without an audience (which is great); the only problem with that is they also assumed just because they all heard what someone said that the microphones picked it up, too. Unintelligible phrases, mumbling, and people yelling over each other were compounded by the fact that comedians would often try to expand on jokes that no one heard, or pause to let that moment sink in. These 5 - 30 second stretches of incoherance were like DEAD AIR to people watching, but worse in a way... they were still being yelled at, but had no idea what the fuck anyone was talking about. If Tough Crowd had paid attention to this comprehension problem and addressed it from the beginning, the show would have been much more successful (and deservedly so). |
