I want to make them big enough for people to be able to print them out on their own... what size should I make them?

hard to say, but my printer does 8in x 10in to make 8.5in x 11in print outs.

I print at 300dpi, 200 if it's a memory issue.

I also design most flyers as 8x10, 300 dpi

When i post online I keep them 8x10 but go down to 72 dpi

yeah, if there was a way we didn't have to reduce dpi so drastically to get stuff up on the web I'd be stoked.

like if we could make it 150 maybe

Relapse has all their press kit information online at 300 dpi, logos, band photos etc

hm... that would be 2550px by 3000px
in jpeg terms, that's about 2.5MB.

hm.. a little too big.

I think 150 dpi would suffice, or you could shrink the dimensions with a disclaimer about it having to be resized

dpi and inches don't mean much.
it's all about pixels.

take a 300dpi picture and DL it with IE and it automatically shows it as 72dpi, which means it's huge.

8x10inches at 300 dpi means there are 2400 pixels along one side and 3000 pixels along the other side.

you may not be able to do it at a good quality

if you want people to print them, I mean, would making the grayscale reduce the file size?

[Sep 30,2005 10:14am - DreamingInExile ""]
what about zipped tiff files? the zip archive will cut the file size by about 45%, and most (if not all) people have an archiving program that will open .zip files (winzip, winrar, winace, stuffit on mac will open 'em)

so have a 72dpi preview image, and a zipped tiff file for printing

cause,
1840px by 1225px jpeg = 1MB
1840px by 1225px tif = 6.7MB zipped = 3.7MB

understood... hmm, there must be a way, what about PDF's?

you aren't going to get smaller than a jpeg in most cases.
sometimes a gif will do it, but usually it looks like #%%#

Start taking donations and get a second server for rttp, lol! if I had more bandwidth, I'd offer storage on my host, but I'm limited on bw, because I'm not rich.

right now, I have 80GB with 1.2TB/mo
but at 2.5GB/flyer.. it would fill up faster.

2.5MB you mean? :-P

and you can always write a routine to delete the fliers after the show has passed, or even a routine that the same IP can't grab the flier multiple times... Maybe have the flier zipped anyways, so once you grab it, you have it, insted of having it displayed in your browser window

someone mentioned pdf
that would work well, except not everyone can convert to pdf
as easily i should say as others. Unless rev was gonna
convert everyones uploaded jpg to pdf then reload them

the idea to delete them after the date is a good idea
also, make it so kids cant post flyers for dates too far in advance.
say no more than 2 months or even a month, so kids arent posting flyers for May 2007

also can only people who have registered post flyers?

well, if you use photoshop, you can save as a PDF. there are functions in PHP that you can use to create PDF's as well, I'm not sure on the whole process, but I know it can be done

just put a place for people to link to an offsite flyer
most bands or promoters with sites prob wouldnt
mind hosting the flyers themselves, i know i wouldnt mind.
that should cut back a lil

that's a good idea too, then you can have the flier in whatever size & format you want, and it won't effect the rev's bandwidth
