The 2006 Texas assault incident refers to a beating during the early morning of April 22, 2006 in an unincorporated section of Harris County, Texas, United States. The details of the attack lead to publication of the story in various media outlets inside and outside of the United States. The site of the incident, a residence in the 21300 block of Glenbranch, located north of the city of Houston, has a "Spring, Texas" address, and is therefore identified as taking place "in Spring."

The assault

During a party held at the Sons family house, two students who attended Klein Collins High School, David Henry Tuck of the 3400 block of Nutwood, and Keith Robert Turner of the 21000 block of Star Grass, brutally beat, tortured, and sodomized David Ritcheson, a 17-year old Hispanic Klein Collins student and former running back for the school football team.

Tuck and Turner were both under the influence of recreational drugs, and said they were told that Ritcheson, also under the influence of drugs, tried to kiss a 12 year old girl, Danielle Sons. Danielle's statement threw Tuck into a rage, and Tuck punched Ritcheson. The first punch was so powerful it broke Ritcheson's cheekbone and knocked him unconscious, stated Red Duke, the emergency physician who treated him. Tuck and Turner dragged the teenager outside, stripped him naked, burned the victim with cigarettes, choked him with a gardening hose and proceeded to engrave a swastika into the victim's chest. Tuck kicked Ritcheson with steel-toed boots and violently kicked a PVC pipe up his rectum several inches while yelling racial slurs. After the sodomy ended, the perpetrators poured bleach on the victim's body to conceal the evidence of the crime. The vicious attack lasted for over an hour. The night after the assault, Ritcheson's lungs failed, and the victim was placed on a ventilator. According to County prosecutor Mike Trent, the attackers may have poured bleach inside the pipe as high levels of toxins were found in the boy's organs. The victim stayed in the hospital for three months, requiring to undergo close to forty surgeries and contemplating a possible life of infirmity, because of the PVC pipe had perforated his bladder and caused extensive internal injuries.

In December 2006, Tuck and Turner were both convicted of aggravated sexual assault. Tuck, who was described by prosecutors as a white supremacist, was sentenced to life in prison, and Turner was sentenced to 90 years. They both will not be eligible for parole until 2035 at the earliest. Tuck has since appealed his life sentence.

David Ritcheson

Activism

On April 17, 2007 Ritcheson, after agreeing to make his name public, testified to the United States House of Representatives Judiciary Subcommittee about passing more stringent hate crime laws.

Life and death

After the attack, he refused professional counseling and never spoke about his experiences to his friends. On July 1, 2007 Ritcheson committed suicide by jumping from the deck of the MS Ecstasy, a cruise ship bound for the Mexican resort island of Cozumel. The incident happened at around 7:35 a.m. (as quoted by The Houston Chronicle) to 8:35 a.m. (as quoted by KHOU-TV) aboard the MS Ecstasy, according to a written statement from Carnival Cruise Lines. The ship's crew pulled the 18-year-old's body from the water about 45 minutes afterward. Carnival Cruise Lines officials would not confirm his identity; Rick Dovalina, head of LULAC in Houston, said that he confirmed through the family's attorney, Carlos Leon, that Ritcheson died.
