I was in the process of backing things up from it.. like all my RTTP shows and a ton of other things.
almost nothing copied off of it and then it started to smoke! the worst thing is that the other drive that I could have replaced the burnt up part from... well.. I just sent it in to get replaced last week! arg! I hope they send back the same exact drive back to me.

ok, the controller board for my new maxtor fits perfectly.. slightly different part number, but the drives are identical. think it'll work?

Tis the season for dieing hard drives. My laptop's harddrive is done. Which kinda sucks because I spent 3 months configuring the laptop for mobile audio use. Ironically the church gig was the last time I really used it. I guess once I got the lords chants on my hard drive it killed it.
My internet pc is acting like whore, Its either the hard drive or the power supply. The power supply is only 1.5yrs old, so I am leaning towards the hard drive.

I've had sooo many hard drives die on me you would think I would be used to it by now.

I need to back up even more aggressively I guess... just need to get this friggin data off.

seagate has drive recovery services. a 500GB would be in the $1500 range though.

gay. I just sent them a drive that died a few months ago too. I'm going to try to swap the controller board with the other drive I found. if that works, I will copy everything off of it and then wipe and RMA the drive.

no sata raid? what are you? 1994 or something?

I don't know how I would hook a SATA RAID up to a laptop without a pc express card.
BTW: SATA was invented in 2003

Man.... you're playin' around with TB's of data with a laptop? I thought you'd have some mean server or something. I wanna get a big box and fill it with hdds and get a gbit lan going w/ redundant epenis installed.

the_reverend said:BTW: SATA was invented in 2003
Okay. That confirms that we didn't have SATA in 1994.

[Nov 11,2007 2:09pm - the_reverend ""]
these tb's are just storage. I don't want to put them in a machine cause then I would leave them on 24-7 when I don't access these except to dump data on them once or twice a week.

I swapped the controller board with another drive and I'm backing it up right now. once it's done, I'll try to low level format it and then send it back to seagate. drive #2 this month that I've had to send back to them.

well the Drobo is pretty new. They're going to be coming out with one that has networking soon. I'm sure the price will drop and you'll be able to find a drobo bundled with the drives for about that price.

The beauty of drobo is you don't have to worry about setting up raid at all and you still have full data security. You could pull a drive right out while it's running and it would replicate that data onto another drive in the background and you wouldnt lose access to any of your data while this goes on.

yeah, that rules. I just got all my data off that drive that burnt.
now I can RMA it tomorrow.

you can do software raid in windows too... DON'T DO IT. you will only be able to view them on that computer in the same orde/setup. I had a huge issue when I switched up computers.

I know, but it's the only external raid drive I found that had eSATA and the amount of space I was looking for.

I've never had a drive die on me so hopefully the good luck continues. I have an 80gb maxtor from 2001 which is always spinning that still works great. Even if it does die, all my stuff will be raid 1.

I've had sooooo many drives die on me now. so so so so many. I need to buy 2 more 500's. $200 verse $1500 recovery cost. it's a no brainer.

I wish that 1TB hard drives would come down in price.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148278
granted, I spent that much for an 8GB in the 90's.

btw, a lot of the maxtor and wd high capacity external drives are 1-year warranty as well.

funny, that 1TB I just linked says
Pros: Enormous drive, very quiet, low heat, 5 Yr Warranty. Professional version, not WD gamer kind !

put that in an external case and bang, 5 year warranty.

[Nov 12,2007 11:22am - porphyria  ""]
yeah, it's one seagate drive, internal.

I was just pointing out that the external WD's and Maxtors are 1 year warranty as well.... probably because they think people are going to be moving them all over the place.

yeah but with raid you're limited to how many drives, type, and size depending on what raid flavor you go with. With drobo you can pop in any drive of any size and it will work. All the data security is done by the drobo software. I know that a friend of mine has one of the earlier drobo's. He had a drive that was on it's last legs. It kept crashing and telling him the drive was unformatted and then after a restart it would work again. So he knew it was ready to die. It was a 60GB. He popped it in the drobo with a 160 and in about an hour all his data was backed up to the other drive and he could pull out the 60GB and toss it.

$5.mo is amazing. I might seriously look into that.

DYA: those look like SCSI, not IDE or SATA
